SmartMusic, the complete music practice system, is uniquely suited to help students learn to improvise. They can:

    • Practice exercises on the blues scale, ii-V7-I and iii-vi-ii-V7-I chord progressions.
    • Practice Play by Ear exercises that assess and grade what they did right and wrong.
    • Practice tunes with a variety of improvisation patterns notated onscreen.
    • See transcriptions of what expert piano, bass and drum musicians play while comping behind soloists.
    • Record themselves with accompaniment to hear how they sound and then make adjustments and corrections on their own.
    • Study tunes by Pulitzer Prize winning composer Wynton Marsalis and other jazz greats like Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, etc.
    • Practice with accompaniments recorded by Wynton Marsalis’ rhythm section.

IAJE members will be eligible to receive the complete SmartMusic subscription to over 30,000 titles in a variety of genres plus certain jazz titles exclusive to IAJE by Ellington, Monk, Gershwin, Brubeck, and others.
